Legacy

A scholar of Japanese medieval and early modern literature, best known for studies of Matsuo Bashō. He served as professor emeritus at Ochanomizu University and as president of Jissen Women's University. His long contributions to literary scholarship and the haiku community were highly regarded; he received the Order of the Sacred Treasure (2nd class) in 1988.
