Legacy
Contributed to Japanese literary studies and criticism by bridging English literature and semiotics through scholarship, translation and poetry. Served many years on the faculty of Waseda University and was known for introducing Kenneth Burke's work to Japan. Recipient of the 1987 Hirabayashi Taiko Literary Prize.
