Legacy

A shipping businessman who served long in local politics as Uwajima mayor (4 terms), a member of the House of Representatives (2 terms), and chairman of the Ehime Prefectural Assembly. He worked on island development and regional infrastructure, but his later career was marred by arrests and a conviction for election law violations. His son, Koichi Yamamoto, later served in national politics.

Trivia

  • In the 1958 House of Representatives election he was initially declared elected on TV election returns but ultimately lost by only 304 votes; the episode was dubbed a "banzai loss".
  • While mayor of Uwajima he was arrested for election law violations and received a two-year prison sentence at first instance.
  • His eldest son is former Diet member Koichi Yamamoto.
