The Harpole Report

エリック・ライト

The Night the Gods Smiled is Eric Wright's mystery introducing Toronto inspector Charlie Salter. It combines urban everyday life with the texture of a police novel, relying less on spectacle than on character observation and the steady work of investigation.

Reviews

  • Delightful humour

I hadn't even heard of this author- Carr. I chanced upon his name somewhere, and I read reviews of his books. This book came highly recommended. So I decided to give it a try. It is a delightful book. I plan to buy more of his books

  • Absolut bestens.

    Alles absolut bestens.

  • Teaching hilarity

For anyone who has been a teacher this book is an absolute must read. The opening exchange between Harpole and the caretaker is absolutely hilarious. The telling of the story with a combination of letters, journal entries and observations works well. In particular the approach of beaurocrats to lack of cooperation is quite revealing. The quality of this reprint of the book is very good I cannot recommend this book more highly and I smile every time I think of Harpole and his experiences

  • Quirky and clever

An unusual portrayal of the primary school system in the 1970s. For anyone who can remember those times this is a gem.

  • meaningful and FUNNY

funny great accurate and satiric description of teaching and school administration a very goo read. Up there with other works by JL Carr
