• Excellent adventure

  The characters in this book are vivid and spring to life off the page. There is a massive cast and an epic style to this book, however it manages to stay very readable and it was difficult to put it down.

• Maybe my second favorite fantasy novel ever.

  After JRR, possibly no other author has filled me with such joy and wonder as this lovely book. My thanks to the author.

• Zwischen Fantasy und Historie

  Dieses Meisterwerk von Jo Walton verfolgt die Entwicklung in einem "England" nach der "Römerzeit", das sehr dicht an der realen Entwicklung angesiedelt ist. So war es nicht, streng historisch betrachtet. Aber der Einblick in die Kultur, die Beziehungen der Völker und vor allem die intensive Auseinandersetzung mit dem Vordringen der neuen Religion, die alte Mythen und Riten zu verdrängen droht, sind mit großem Einfühlungsvermögen beschrieben. Es ist die Geschichte von Sulien, die einen Überfall der "Wikinger" überlebt und anschließend ihren Lebensweg in der Armee findet. Das Ziel - ein Landfriede für alle - ist zuerst eine ferne Vision, scheint aber dann zum Greifen nah. Doch echter Friede ist schwer zu schaffen, fordert einen hohen Preis - und will dann auch durch ständigen, harten Einsatz am Leben erhalten werden. Suliens Geschichte lehrt, dass Freiheit und Zivilisation Werte sind, für die man kämpfen muss und die man nie als selbstverständlich hinnehmen sollte. Mindestens im Andenken an jene, die vor uns kamen und die hier eindrücklich und sensibel beschriebenen Kämpfe ausfochten. Der Kauf dieses Buches lohnt sich unbedingt.

• A difficult slog of a read, but good

  This book is a very difficult read. Very hard to keep track of the very many character names/relationships and places/countries. Found myself skipping back and forth very frequently in a usually failing attempt to keep track of what was going on. If you can manage to get past the never-ending onslaught of obscure names and locations however, there is quite a decent story buried within...

• The King's Peace

  This is a really good book. It takes a little getting into -- there is a lot of local terminology used in the world and none of it is explicitly defined. And there isn't a glossary. I was annoyed at first, but I finally realized that it was OK really, because the old woman is telling her story to people who don't remember what she lived through. So we're all in the same boat. We learn the language from its usage. I read a lot of the fantasy series. This is up there with the best.
