Great Read

Really good book. Its interesting to me that some of the best and most successful authors (Baldacci, Isles, Grisham) write about Mississippi so much.
Nice Discovery of a Great Author

This book is a murder mystery with several sub plots that tie together nicely. I never read this author before, so don't know if her books are 'formula written' or not. This one has great suspense and build-up. I enjoyed that the reader got to understand some of the background of the supporting characters.
This is another excellent installment in the Anna Pigeon series.

My favorite aspect of Nevada Barr's books is the way she transports you to the scene (a different national park) in each book. Set on the Natchez Trace, this book is Barr at her best. You can almost feel and hear the menacing kudzu growing outside. Since I read this during a cold, snowy week in Iowa, that gives you an idea of Barr's skill. The story is tight and the characters well-drawn. It would be easy to present stereotypes in this setting, but Barr doesn't fall for that.
Vivid visuals, good mystery

This is the first novel that I have read by Nevada Barr, but I plan to "go back" and read the rest in this series because I really enjoyed the Anna Pigeon character. Also, the book had vivid descriptions of the area and persons surrounding the Natchez Trace which added much to the tale. Anna has just assumed a management forest service job on the Natchez Trace. She is the first woman in such a position in this area of the "Deep South," and is subject to significant animosity on several fronts, especially from her two long-timer subordinates. Unfortunately, within days a local girl is found murdered in her jurisdiction, under peculiar circumstances. Along with her charming counterpart in the Sherrif's office, Anna dives into the investigation, although she has little understanding of the relationships and dynamics among the locals. This is not the most suspenseful page-turner that I have read, although the mystery remains well-concealed until the end. It is, however, a very pleasant read. I highly recommend it.

Anna Pigeon' s exploits in Mississippi ran very true from a Southern girls recollections. Very well written, even with memory magic of kudzu vines smell of grape. I love Nevada BARR!
