An instant #1 New York Times bestseller! A USA Today bestseller! Pacific Rim meets The Handmaid's Tale in this blend of Chinese history and mecha science fiction for YA readers. The boys of Huaxia dream of pairing up with girls to pilot Chrysalises, giant transforming robots that can battle the mecha aliens that lurk beyond the Great Wall. It doesn't matter that the girls often die from the mental strain. When 18-year-old Zetian offers herself up as a concubine-pilot, it's to assassinate the ace male pilot responsible for her sister's death. But she gets her vengeance in a way nobody expected—she kills him through the psychic link between pilots and emerges from the cockpit unscathed. She is labeled an Iron Widow, a much-feared and much-silenced kind of female pilot who can sacrifice boys to power up Chrysalises instead. To tame her unnerving yet invaluable mental strength, she is paired up with Li Shimin, the strongest and most controversial male pilot in Huaxia. But now that Zetian has had a taste of power, she will not cower so easily. She will miss no opportunity to leverage their combined might and infamy to survive attempt after attempt on her life, until she can figure out exactly why the pilot system works in its misogynist way—and stop more girls from being sacrificed.
XIRAN JAY ZHAO is a first-gen immigrant from small-town China who was raised by the Internet. A recent graduate of Vancouver’s Simon Fraser University, they wrote science fiction and fantasy while they probably should have been studying more about biochemical pathways. You can find them on Twitter for memes, Instagram for cosplays and fancy outfits, and YouTube for long videos about Chinese history and culture. Iron Widow is their first novel.

great book
Great book - wish it had been around when I was a teenager. Very fresh take on the kind of YA overthrow the system genre, and mechs are always cool. The incorporation of Chinese historical culture is a nice touch as well. Men, set your kneejerk emotional responses aside ;) and read it. Even if you don't love it 100%, it's an interesting read.

I really need to get the visuals of the Chrysalis. I really do. Especially the White Tiger. Please. My comment below is to persuade japanese people to buy this book.

Tortured Beauty
kintsugi or JuCi comes to mind. Zetian's story laces a broken life and society with the warmth of the relations she has with the other protagonists. However, with her as the only point of view, it leaves one wondering how much of the truth she actually sees. The mecha system is elaborate and well-concieved. The inspirations are clear, but twisted and taken in a very original way. The qi system and mythical references were a lot of fun to see in a scifi!

The best book you'll ever read
I'm a really huge fan of fantasy and this book was the best mix of The hunger games and The maze runner, with an ACTUAL strong and brave female protagonist

Dang!
So I almost never write reviews. But this book needs it. I am not normally into a super feminist story line. Usually they are not actually feminist, but are instead man hating. This book balances that rage that most, if not all women feel with respecting and being respected by those people who deserve it. It is a deep, often dark journey into the depths of where that rage comes from, that I genuinely do not know if it could have been portrayed by a better culture to bring meaning the the phrase "beauty is pain". This is a journey of shedding the expectations that have been ground into you by society, loving those who have earned your respect, and making the world tremble with who you have become. With it I learned a HUGE amount about Chinese culture that really emphasizes the gem this book is. The author paces her descriptions so you are rarely underwhelmed, or overwhelmed with details. Occasionally, things are forced the speed up and skip important parts, likely due to it being technically being a young adult novel, and keeping the page numbers in check. I have read ...a lot of books. Literally hundreds. And this is easily the best I have read in a very long time. I put the writing on par with early Mercedes Lackey, Anne McCaffery, Terry Brooks, and others of similar caliber. The authors who aren't afraid the write about the dark side of humanity, the realities that happen right in front of our noses. I will be watching this author, and I look forward to reading what she has to bring for years to come.

Buy it!
Became one of my favorites. I really loved this book. Before starting it i read some reviews but that never made me judge beforehand. When I started it the first chapter was a little harder to get into, but once I did... Omg. So this book has so many layers. Forst of all, I do love that the protagonist stays true to herself even when it would be easier to just let the others lead and act. She stays real in my eyes, with her desires, Decisions, aims. I loved the mecha part because I'm a huge fan of Pacific Rim, tho the language as a non native speaker was a little really little bit needing more attention. I loved the Chinese culture, going to the writer's page and seeing the comparisons of the emperors and empresses she made and the arts I enjoyed even more. I highly recommend to check her page. Now the Story is nice With twists, some more or less are rooting Early in the readers mind, but not easily guessable. I loved that the triangle is actually one, and the things that Zetian states about her society.hits hard. The action parts are good, I enjoyed the politics too. And in all everything was at its place for me. As I shared on a server, this book had been taken with expectations from many who waited for a feminist approach, then was called too aggressive... Sure it has a lot of female rage because Of an unfair society. I understand Zetian and her choices. It doesn't make false ideas about feminism. It fits the world she lives in. I especially liked that despite her being in a way unable to walk freely her mind was really as iron. And the end left me wanting to Read the next book immediately. So yes, I purchased Heavenly Tyrant and can't wait to start. ❤️
