Review Summaries
-
Readers respond to the idea of seeing war through a nonhuman narrator and to the treatment of loyalty. The restrained narration intensifies the sadness of a being used as a weapon.

A New Denton Collection, A Cause for Celebration
Bradley Denton is a writer whose work I've followed almost from his first national publication (I played a small role in exploratory talks several years ago when a Hollywood friend sought to develop Denton's fine novel LUNATICS for motion pictures). Sixteen years after Denton's fine, highly-recommended story collection ONE DAY CLOSER TO DEATH AND OTHER STORIES, he is back with three winners in SERGEANT CHIP AND OTHER NOVELLAS. I read the title story in its original magazine publication and re-read it in this collection in the autumn of 2014, less than a month ofter my own dog passed away. It remains a fresh, strong piece of writing, and here it is teamed with two other winners, "The Adakian Eagle," featuring a fictionalized Dashiell Hammett during his World War II soldier years, when he was stationed in Alaska (what? You didn't know Hammett served in Alaska? Read on, for Denton has done his research. Read on ...), and "Blackburn and the Blade," a return to Denton's greatest creation, the serial killer who is the main character of the haunting novel BLACKBURN. Three stories. Three winners. One writer who always delivers. That formula makes SERGEANT CHIP AND OTHE RNOVELLAS well worth the buying, well worth the reading.
