日本古典の入門書でもなく、専門書でもない、古典を語りながら、物事の本質を語る本。もっと読まれれば良いのに。
夜、テレビを消して寝ようという前に、この本を手に取って、少し読む。それだけで、１日が確かなものになったような気がする。というのは、竹西女史がこの本を書いたときは、30代。連載を本にしたもので初めての著書であるが、その深い思索に啓発される。彼女は、源氏物語について、宣長に導かれつつ。こういう。「殊に人の感ずべきことのかぎりを、さまざまに書き表して、あはれを見せたるもの」と。また紫式部がさまざまな恋を媒介として、、いかにあはれの世界の創造に成功したかということも言う。それだけでは、あはれ論だけれど、紫式部は、自分を、他人と同じ遠近法によってながめずにはいられなかった人とも言う。専門家としてではなく、こんなふうに日本の古典を、語ってくれた人はいないのに、読まれていないのは残念である。
