熊本大学法学部教授。昭和２３年、熊本市生。九大在学中に「ホトトギス」「阿蘇」で俳句をはじめ、昭和５２年「ホトトギス」同人。平成１１年「阿蘇」主宰。平成７年、朝日俳壇賞受賞。評論集『転換期の俳句と思想』、句集『春雪』など。
