子供を愛し続ける不思議なおじさん
この実質的なデビュー作品で、野間児童文学推奨作品賞を得た、静岡市出身の作家は、静岡市の中心に居宅を構えながら、郊外に、自然一杯の畑のある家を持ち、そこで、「原始人」のような生活もしている。 一方で、山や海に出かけて自然と戯れ、他方で、近所の子供たちに、「作文教室」として文章を教えている。単に文章を教えるのではなく、毎回「びっくり箱」と称して、例えばスズメバチの巣を見せたり、不思議な生き物を見せたりして、その薀蓄を傾ける。 そして、夏と冬に子供たちをつれて、遠くは慶良間諸島、知床、小笠原諸島に出かけ、近くは、伊豆や富士のふもとで自然との関わりを教える。 作家が本業なのか、子供に自然と人間とのふれあいを伝えることを使命としているのかは、正直不明である。 私は、このおじさんとひょんなことで知り合って、子供３人を小学校１年から高校三年までお預けしたが、おかげさまで、子供は本当にすくすく育った。 さて、この「海から来たイワン」は、残念ながらお知り合いになったときには、手に入らず、本人から借りて読んだのだが、正直に告白するが、ストーリーもよく覚えていない。 ただ、この作家が、単に、子供に夢を与える夢想家ではなく、実践に裏打ちされた子供の見方であるということを再確認させた物語だと思ったことは覚えている。 行動派の児童文学作家の真骨頂としてぜひともお奨めしたい。
