• As good as ever

  This book deserves all the rave reviews and attention it is getting I might have just finished my favorite read of 2019. This will be hard to top. My recommendation couldn't be any higher -- and sometimes it is just enough to say "read this book -- don't hesitate."

• ほんとに代表作なのかなあ･･･

  双子の兄弟やその叔父などの人生を、過去と現代を交互に描きながら物語る。 戦時の過去と戦後の現代の描写が行ったり来たりするが、時制が混乱することはなかった。 また、会話文中心であるせいかスラスラと読み進むことができたが、その分、作品全体に濃密さが欠けているように思えた。 人間存在の不安定性や人生の不条理がテーマなら、梅崎作品には本作よりもっと面白い作品があるのになあと感じた。 私の読みが浅い可能性は否定できないが、これが今の正直な感想です。

  Thanks again for another wonderful story I started this book and I was hooked before chapter one. In the introduction letter it felt like the author was calling me out. A great book, a must read and very difficult to put down when you start reading it.

• うまや路や松のはろかに狂ひ凧

  冒頭、「凧」が早々と姿を現して 意外の感にうたれます。 というのも、著者の傑作『蜆』では、なかなか「蜆」が姿を現さず、 「『外套』って題が適当なんじゃ」と思っているときに、不意打ちのように登場するや、 以降の人生でこの小説を思い出すことなく蜆を見るのが不可能となるほどの衝撃を、 蜆から与えられることになるからです。 とおもっていると、やはり本作でも、大きな仕掛けが埋め込まれていました。 語りの主体が不明瞭で、書いてあることに何ら奇異なことがないのに、 どこかしら、何のために、また、なにに向って語りが進行しているのか掴み切れず、 取りとめがないなあ、と思ってるうちに、あれあれと叔父が生々しく存在を無視できなくなってきて、 最後の最後に「凧」が再び姿をみせて、芝不器男が「狂い」と形容した凧の姿に小説全体が浮かびあがってきます。 意のままに操れず急降下をする凧と、見えずともそれを必死に立て直そうともがき、 更に複雑な運動の連鎖に巻き込まれているであろう凧を挙げる者への観察者のまなざし。 糸は切れるのか切れないのか。 ここで、冒頭の「凧」は「語りのルール」を導入するための準備だったときづきます (私の現在の叙述の最後に唐突に女のその後の経過が三人称視点で行空けもなく連続していて混乱する。 が、直後に、それを知り得た私の事情が語られ、以降、三人称視点が、つねに誰か登場人物の語りとして溶け込んでいる仕組みが導入されてる)。 突き放しつつこちらも揺れる視線の劇の導入が、畢竟の傑作『幻化』のあの望遠鏡へと結実していくのかと思われます。

• 謎の作品

  昔から、芸術選奨受賞作でありながら褒める人を見たことがないという長編で、『群像』1963年1-5月連載。題名は、冒頭で、主人公の眼の前で起きた自動車事故に由来する。道路標識に自動車が接触し、その上半分が折れて狂い凧のように飛んで女にぶつかったという。 その後は戦争中の回顧になり、双子の兄弟である城介が軍隊で自殺する話、父の話、叔父の話ととりとめがない。

• I read... a lot

  I've recommended this book several times already, finished it in a couple days myself. Please, if there's any book everyone should read this summer - READ THIS. I am so happy that I found this book. My last read was a silly romance novel, not my cup of tea. This was so refreshing, no fairytale just real life. Women of any age would enjoy reading this book.

• Well done!

  Though I am an avid reader, I have difficulties lately in falling into a book. Within a couple of pages or a chapter, I lose focus or interest and put down whatever I’m reading. I chose this book out of the 6 options for the Kindle First Reads Program. I didn't expect to like it thinking it was a fantasy based book which is not my usual choice but the others did not catch my interests at all

• Readers will enjoy every minute of this lovely book.

  This book was hard to put down and I didn’t want it to end. I’m sure I’ll visit this one again in years to come. Not necessarily a griping page turner, but definitely wanted to see what happened next. Loved this book, best one I’ve read In a long time! Enjoy! I don't want to put any spoilers in my review. The book is a treasure! I guarantee you won't be disappointed.
