愛知県生まれ。元小中学校教員。「グッバイドール」で第12回月刊MOE童話大賞童話賞受賞。1996年、『ぼくとカジババのめだまやき戦争』(ポプラ社)でデビュー。『WA・O・N 夏の日のトランペット』(ひくまの出版)で第7 回新・北陸児童文学賞受賞。『がっこうかっぱのイケノオイ』(童心社)が第57回青少年読書感想文全国コンクール小学校低学年の部課題図書に選ばれる。『先生、しゅくだいわすれました』(童心社)がミュンヘン国際児童図書館の選ぶブックリスト「The White Ravens 2016」に選ばれる。2017年『神隠しの教室』(童心社)で第55回野間児童文芸賞を受賞。その他の作品に『夜間中学へようこそ』(岩崎書店)『今、空に翼広げて』(講談社)など多数。
