The title "June Drop" derives from the physiological phenomenon of trees naturally shedding underdeveloped fruit, serving as a metaphor for the characters inner struggles. ちいさな光のような作品
現代の純文学とはどのようなものかと知りたくなり、2019年以降に芥川賞・三島由紀夫賞・泉鏡花文学賞・太宰治賞・林芙美子文学賞・文藝賞・群像新人文学賞の各賞の受賞作をアトランダムに15冊ほど読んだが、そのほとんどに辟易し「もう純文学はだめなのではないか？」と幻滅した。そんな中、本作はキャラクターがいて、物語があり、起承転結があり、カタルシスがあり、作者が「これを書きたい」という声が伝わってきた。甘さや弱さはあるかもしれないが一服の清涼剤のような読後感があり、純文学に絶望しかけていた私にわずかな希望を与えてくれた。

ご都合主義の、誘導的な、そんな話の作り方を感じたので、この受賞作にはいまひとつ入りきれなかった。結局この話、二百五十枚も使って自分の父親が自分が生まれた日の次の日に自殺したことをずっと根に持って、母親が違う男の子供を身ごもったら、その赤ん坊が流れることを本心で願っていたという、それを懺悔した話だった。でも、そこまで言うんなら、翌日に死んだ経緯も教えてほしい。どうせわかっているんだろ、と思った。 この主人公は、入念に片頭痛と付き合いをしたい人のようであった。会社に、社会に片頭痛を持っている人間なんて掃いて捨てるほどいる。これしきのこと、みんな身の、忘れ無きケアとして特効薬を常に携え、自己を鼓舞することで乗り切っているのに。自分を育ててくれた人たちへつべこべと恨みがましい。祖父祖母は亡き息子の血を引いた孫を懸命にサポートしたいと言ったと思う。育てたいとすら言ったのではないか。結局なにか、弱い振りをしたい？しないと受賞しない？ そういうのは文学として大変つまらない。
