象の登志子が死の間際にある。「僕」は寝不足と疲労を引きずりながら同じ恵良川動物園の象係とその死までの経緯に対応する立場にある。「僕」の父親は二度目の自殺に失敗して故郷の病院にいる。 父親の遺体はきっと誰にとっても「地上で最も巨大な死骸」だ。 故郷の泥海に足を取られ、引き込まれそうになりながら生きて行く「僕」の生。それは母親の死体から生まれた生だ。（「僕」の母親は出産中に亡くなった。） 文章について―この若さでこのデジタル時代にあって、これほどの確かさで美しい文を書ける、というのはどういうことか。 厳しい内省を続けて来た人の力のように思える。
