名作評伝
詩人・生田春月が、「青鞜」に載った西崎花世の文章を読んで、この人こそ自分と結婚すべき女性だと言って、生田長江宅の階段を駆け降りてきて、とうとう結婚した話、花世の安田皐月との貞操論争、そして春月が播磨灘で船から投身自殺したことなど、断片は知っていたが、花世がひときわ背が低く顔もまずく、春月の浮気に悩んだことなど、詳しく知ることができた。しかし本書の白眉は、春月の死後も長く生きた花世が、戦後、市井の女たち相手に「源氏物語」の講義を始め、首都圏一円で展開しつつ、自分は貧しいアパートの一室で暮らし続けた、最後の章である。私は、泣きながら読んだ。平林たい子賞受賞にふさわしい名作評伝である。
