文明崩壊後の地球が舞台の近未来ＳＦの力作
核戦争後のカリフォルニアで元ミュージシャンの主人公が邪教と関わる事になり・・・というお話。 この手の小説は背景となる舞台の描写が巧いか下手かで印象が随分変わりますが、本書はかなり成功している様に思えました。馬に牽かれる自動車、金の代わりになる蒸留酒、自転車暴走族、ペリカンと呼ばれる楽器、世界を支配しようという邪教・・・とこの著者ならではのイメージが奔流の様に読者に迫ってきて作品世界に圧倒されました。逆にこの著者特有のイメージに慣れるまでに時間のかかる人には少々通読がきついと思うかもしれませんが。 そこに主人公が邪教に捕まった元カノを救うという本筋が絡み、異様な世界で奮闘する主人公が活躍するというお話は、ありがちと言えばありがちな感じですが、そういう意見を補って余りある面白さで読者を納得させてくれます。本書はディック記念賞を受賞していて、著者のパワーズという人もディックに影響を受けているとの事で、難解になりそうな感じですが、あまり小難しくならず、かと言って通俗にも流れない卓越した作品になっている所に、本書の真価があると思いました。 文明崩壊後の近未来ＳＦの力作。機会があったら是非。
