ジャック、帰る
前巻のラストで故郷を出たジャック、どうやらロンドンに行っていたらしく、久しぶりに帰ってくる。といっても、凱旋ではない。 てゆーか、アル中どころかヘロイン中毒はまずいだろう、ジャック！！ いやまずいよ、これは……酒なら、まだ可愛いもんだけど（実際のアル中ともなれば、可愛いとは言っていられまいが）。 探偵のくせに、相変わらずほとんど何もしないジャック（解決する気あるのか？）。おかげでちっとも事件は進まない……。 それでも最後には解決する上、それなりの評判を取ってしまうのがジャック。ちょっと心は痛まないんだろか、と思ったりする。 名探偵とも、ハードボイルドとも些か違う。だが、明らかに後者を意識している。 読書好き故にあちこちに出てくる引用文。洒落た（ひねくれたとも言う）会話と、ジャックの独白が特徴。 いい奴なんだ、ジャックは。最低だけど。それを自分でも意識しているあたり。彼に言わせれば、探偵なんざ最低の人間がやることなんだろう。だが彼は確かに、正義を持っている人だ。彼なりの正義を。 でもせめて、ヘロイン中毒だけは治してほしいもんです。
