英国SFの巨匠による円熟作
話の大きなSFネタ自体はオーソドックスなものでした。 ただそれを、古書から始まるミステリー、過去の戦争、二人の男のロマンス、現代イングランドの主人公が徐々に巻き込まれながら関わっていく個性的な人々、と様々なピースを見せながらゆったりと明かしていく展開はさすがでした。 英国SF作家協会賞受賞作というのも頷けます（ショート・フィクション部門で、長編としては短め。同じ2018年の長編賞を調べたら、こちらも邦訳のある『ウォーシップ・ガール』でした。さらに翌年の同部門が、この作品と似たテーマをもっと捻くってみせたような『こうしてあなたたちは時間戦争に負ける』なのもちょっとおもしろい） 『黎明の王 白昼の女王』からずっと好きな作者なので、『サイバラバード・デイズ』のような多文化SF系作品では、おそらくマクドナルドの最高傑作だと訳者もあとがきで述べている『River of Gods』も翻訳を出してもらえませんかね？
