言い表しきれないもの
本格的な近代文学論でありつつ、著者自身の母への追想（昭和十年代のある家族の見事なスケッチにもなっている）が静かにせせらぎのような音をたてて流れている。次のような一節。「母なるものは言語化がむずかしい。個別的な思い出、人生論的感想としてなら、多すぎるほど書かれているが、文学言語に立っていえば、母というものは人間関係や生の時間の中で言葉にしにくい領域を占めている」。ここから著者は小林秀雄の『モーツアルト』に触れ、この本が実は小林の「母の悲しみ」（―母が悲しんでいる、母のことを悲しむ―）のぎりぎりの表現、「言語化」でもあったことを、小林自身のエピソード（「おつかさんは、今は蛍になってゐる」）を交えながら解明していく。その他、中也や大岡昇平など近代文学、戦後文学を「母なるもの」という観点から読み直した新鮮なエッセイである。
