４０歳の生活者にとって、青年期の輝きとはどんな光をいま放つのか
a神武景気前の不況期に大企業に勤めて１７年、４０歳になる館野杉人には、２０歳の学生のとき参加した皇居前広場で起こった、後にいう「メーデー事件」の経験があって、当時自分がとった行動、その行動に関係する人々について拘ることが多々あった。高校生で参加した恋人の悦子の行方や、騒擾罪の被告となった網島睦夫からの証人依頼の件も含まれる。bまた会社では争議が起こったが、自分の身の振る舞い方について悩む。ｃさらに同僚の前田森子との情愛関係の深まりにつれて、妻子との関係が変化していく。 作者は、この３つの出来事を巧みな表現によって場面転換しつつ織り交ぜながら、各人の心的・身体的な状態を、具体的に言葉で表しながら、青年期に打ち込んだことの人生における意味と、近年では森子との関係になるがそのような「最も充実した生きることへの手ごたえ」（p332）を希求しているように思える。
