幻の本、遂に手元にスリップ入りで到着。文庫版は持ってるが完全版は、この本。

読んで損のない大書である
本書は著者の労作であり、大作である。 アメリカを中心として、都市や国家の生育・成長とミステリの変換とを比較関連させながら論考したものだ。 ミステリの流行には、その時代背景と都市環境が大きく影響する。 例えば、高度成長時代の日本では、都市化と都市部ー地方間格差の広がりに伴い、松本清張を代表とする社会派ミステリやスパイ物が全盛となった。 それが、低成長時代、バブル崩壊や国際情勢の変化などにより、それらが低迷するとともに、クラシックミステリや現実味の少ない本格系にシフトした。 本書を読み通すのは、なかなか労力が必要だ。 しかし、それだけの価値のある本である。 著者がアメリカを取り上げたのは、もちろんミステリの聖地であるためと、フィールドとジャンルの広さのためだろう。 また、ハードボイルドという、日本では今ひとつ盛り上がらないジャンルが、かなり隆盛だからというのもあるかもしれない。 高価だが、間違いなく読み応えがある。 かつての日本では、アメリカは文化・文明の象徴であり、良き先達だった。 今、日本のミステリがアメリカに追いつき追い越せたのかどうか、考えながら読むと良い。
