再構成できない
書かれていることがイメージできないままだ。 再構成できないのだ。プリーストの長編はドラマのようで面白い。 でも短編は、展開が早すぎる。 やはり長編で語る作家なのかもしれない。

この作家の近年の長編に違和感を持つ方にむしろおすすめです
表題作がアンソロジー既出ということもあり、後回しにしていたプリーストの短編集。 「魔法」以降のプリーストの長編ファンタジーは、ストーリーは面白いけれど、どことは言えない品のない感じがひっかかって、世評ほど好きになれずにいました。この作品集にはそういった嫌な「ひっかかり」を感じるものがなく、個人的にはずっと好ましい印象です。 単純に初期作品が多いからかもしれませんが、読みやすさを追求したため官能が俗っぽさにすりかわってしまったような部分がないせいかなもと思います。それを欠点ととらえず、ストーリーテリングの妙と思える方には物足りない作品集かもしれません。この作家の熱心な紹介者である編訳者のあとがきからして、長編翻訳を待たせる間のつなぎとして読ませたいというような書き方だし。 が、向こう受けする作家になってしまったプリーストに違和感を覚える方、ファンタジー的導入の中短編SFが好きな方にはお薦めできる作品集です。
