Wasuke of the Igawaya kanten shop in Osaka’s Tenma district gives two silver kan, money meant for rebuilding Tenmangu Shrine, to save Tsurunosuke after the boy’s father is killed in an act of vengeance. Renamed Matsukichi, the boy learns the severe discipline of trade as an apprentice and searches for his path with the support of those around him. Through details of townspeople’s lives, the novel portrays loss and renewal.

大阪商人の心意気描く初期の傑作。とにかく温かく、泣かせます。身をつくしや、金と銀と双璧なす作品。まだのかたは是非ご一読あれ。それにしても、NHKの金と銀主役は、北川景子さんがはまり役だと思ったのになあ。
