広い視野を持った力作です
表題作はわが国では鎌倉後期、例の「蒙古襲来」直前の激動の時代が背景にある。 高麗（こうらい）王朝時代の朝鮮を侵略した蒙古占領軍とその蒙古に屈服した自国の朝廷に反旗を翻した勢力があった。「三別抄（サンピョルチョ）」だ。彼らが最期の拠点にしたのが耽羅（たんら）、今の済州島（チェジュド）だ。わが国の長崎県の対馬とまるで兄弟のような位置にある島だ。この島には今も独特の丘がある。オルムと呼ばれる。 作者はこう言っている。「オルムの頂で、来るはずのない日本の援軍を待ちながら絶望的な戦いを展開した三別抄の将兵に思いをはせたのがこの小説に結晶しました。」 名も無い元・官妓と、元・奴婢（ぬひ）の男の出会いを軸にして展開される物語は歴史の空白を埋める力作だ。 何より、国家の枠に縛られない歴史認識は、今こそ求められる。
