1954年、静岡県浜松市生まれ。東京藝術大学大学院中退。兵庫県立近代美術館学芸員をへて、現在、東京大学大学院教授(人文社会系研究科文化資源学研究室)、静岡県立美術館館長。19世紀の日本美術の研究をはじめ、祭礼、見世物、作り物、絵馬、記念碑や公共彫刻、建築を扱い、それらを展示、存続、隠蔽、撤廃される社会についての考察を重ねてきた。『美術という見世物』『ハリボテの町』『世の途中から隠されていること』『近くても遠い場所』『股間若衆』『せいきの大問題』など著書多数。
