北原白秋に関する本はあまたあるようだが、この本は伝記的要素もあり詩歌の例示も幅広いので、様々な意味で白秋という個性を見つめようとする人の原本となる本のように思われる。この本のあとに出版された白秋本、川本三郎「白秋望景」（２０１２年刊行）は永井荷風のエピソードを織り交ぜながら白秋の言葉の革新性に焦点をあてているようであり、今年刊行された今野真二の「北原白秋」は白秋のことばが生み出される元となったことばの由来などを取り上げ、詩歌の秘密を解き明かす趣がある。両方とも大変に面白い本であるが、その元には三木卓のこの本の存在があると推測される。かようなほどに様々な刺激を広範囲に与えてくれる著書である。北原白秋を関心持つ人にはベースの本として推薦したい。
