狂乱廿四孝/双蝶闇草子 (創元推理文庫)

Kou Kitamori

Kitsumori Koun's debut full-length mystery centers on the riddles surrounding the famed onnagata Sansei Sawamura Tanosuke and Kawanabe Kyosai's ghost painting, unfolding into a series of murders in the early Meiji kabuki world. Its interplay of obsession, stagecraft, and historical atmosphere makes it rewarding both as period fiction and as a classic mystery.

Work Information

A tragic onnagata and a ghost painting draw a string of murders into early Meiji kabuki.

Tsogen's complete edition pairs Koun Kitsumori's debut novel *Kyoran Nijushi-ko* with the unfinished sequel *Souchou Yami Zoushi*. Set in Saruwaka-cho in the early Meiji era, it layers the mystery around the famed onnagata Tanosuke Sawamura and a ghost painting, bringing together sharp puzzle-making and richly drawn characters in the manner typical of Kitamori's fiction.

Review Summaries

  • As a historical mystery set in the kabuki world, it is praised for the depth created by its period setting and historical figures. Readers often remember it more for the heat of the stage and the characters' obsession than for the mechanics of the case itself.
