内容は濃いです
初版は1977年。私が読んだのは増補版（1996年）で、書版発行以降の事情も盛り込まれている。著者稲垣忠彦氏が研究休暇（サバティカル）でオハイオ州のオバリンに滞在し、２人の子どもを学校に通わせた体験を中心とした、アメリカ教育事情の報告。著者は教育方法史の研究者であり、研究者としての視点と、親としての視点とがバランスよく述べられている。 多くの箇所は、今風にいえばブログ記事の様な感じで書かれているので（もちろん当時はそんなものはなかったが）、読みやすい。しかし内容はかなり濃い。親の視点から書かれた読みやすい文章の背後には、たいへんな学識があると感じられる。1970年代のアメリカおよびイギリスの教育事情について知りたい人、また、それらとの比較で日本の教育を理解したい人には格好の書だと思う。 海外の教育事情の紹介と言うと、以前であればアメリカやイギリスの教育制度や方法を輸入しようとする考えや、そして最近では例えばフィンランド式教育への注目が思い浮かぶ。アメリカ（そしてイギリス）の教育制度や方法の具体的展開と、その社会的・歴史的・理論的背景が述べられていて、彼の地の教育の魅力が十分に伝わるが、同時に、それらを安易に輸入したり模倣したりすることについては警鐘を鳴らす。非常に考えさせられ好著である。
