日本古代において、文学は宮廷社会を中心に展開されてきた。 平安朝の文章道の基本的な性格は宮廷詩人の養成にあり、『菅家文草』など漢詩文はもとより、『源氏物語』等の仮名文学もまた、そのほとんどが宮廷貴族の手によってつくられたものといってよい。 そして、その背景には唐帝国の文化・社会を受容し、再文脈化していく過程があった。 本書では、「宮廷」という古代日中において文化的求心力を有した「場」に着目し、歴史的文脈・社会的文脈からのアプローチにより、平安朝文学、そして唐代文学の特質を明らかにする。 この試みは、平安朝文学の内実を解明するだけでなく、唐代の宮廷文学の意味を従来の視野とは異なるパースペクティブから読み直すことであり、ひいては新たな文化交流史の発見にもつながるものである。
