Kohaikai Research is a scholarly study that reconsiders early haikai, especially the Teimon and Danrin traditions before Basho, through both primary materials and language. By examining associative expression, the bibliography of early haikai books, and individual texts, it reassesses the literary and cultural range of the early Edo period.
Work Information
A study that follows the language and materials of early haikai to illuminate the literary world of the early Edo period from multiple perspectives.
In this collection of studies, Eiko Kawamura approaches early haikai through its materials, texts, and chronology. Its first three parts examine word meanings, views of foreign lands, mimetic expression, textual variants, and transcriptions of early haikai books; its final part presents a chronology of those books. Through close attention to individual sources, the book brings the expression and intellectual background of a field often treated as peripheral into clearer view.
