地味ながら滋味が豊富な一冊
著者の代表作のひとつなので購入した。地味ながらシブい内容。買って損はなかった。

すわりの悪い連作？
「すわりの悪い連作」とは、あとがきの冒頭で作者が書いていることであるが、これは連作なのであろうか。 ４つに分かれた１つめ『海綿』３つめ『無垢』４つめ『天狗』だけならば、連作というよりも長編の章立てと言った方がいいくらいである。語り手を始め主要登場人物も舞台も同じである。 その中に全く関係のない話である２つめ『陥穽』が、ポンと置かれている。『無垢』を読み始めて、１作目の世界に戻っていたのには面喰ってしまった。すぐに４作目の冒頭部分だけ斜め読みして、どうなっているのか確認したほどである。全体のタイトルの意味も、この同一設定の３作についてはとりあえず納得できる。海外からの寄港地的なニュアンスなのだ。 しかし、他の３つとの関わりを持たない『陥穽』は、内容自体が人付き合いの悪い男の話であるというところで、徹底して浮いてしまった作品である。この作品だけについて言えば、妙に文章が自己満足的な説明不足に陥っている感じがして、腹立たしいほど。作者がなぜこれを入れたのか、疑問である。
