詩を愛した少年時代から俳句に導かれ臼田亞浪に師事。亞浪に「思うように句作せよ」と励まされ、高浜虚子を学び、広く俳壇を知り見識を養い、俳壇のリーダーとなった林火。家庭の不幸に見舞われ、俳句によって救われたとの思いから病者や不運な人を俳句によって救おうとしたヒューマニストでもあった。（帯文より）
1943年山口県生まれ。広島大学卒。1976年、大野林火主宰「濱」に入会・師事。2005年、いには俳句会を創設。句集に『雪降れ降れ（第15回俳人協会新人賞）、 『つくづくし』、『八十島』、自註『村上喜代子集』、『間紙』、現代俳句文庫『村上喜代子集』、『軌道』。ユーカリが丘産経学園で「俳句入門A」「俳句入門B」、NHK文化センター千葉で「俳句を楽しむ」などの講座の講師を務める。俳人協会評議員、俳人協会千葉県支部・支部長、千葉県俳句作家協会理事、八千代市俳句協会会長。
