大正から昭和にかけての東京ガイド。 改めて、東京は不思議な都市だと、再認識できます。 そして、団子坂や浅草、深川へと散歩に出掛けたくなります。 1980年代の本だけれども、改めて読み直してみると、また、楽しい。 同潤会アパート巡り、とかも面白そうだ。 ちょっとひねった東京ガイドとして、オススメです。

乱歩作品の副読本として
乱歩の小説の舞台すべてが東京、というわけではない。 しかし、なぜか乱歩には東京がよく似合う。 それは多分、少年探偵団の活躍テリトリーが大部分東京都内であるから、というのが大きい。 あの、青銅の魔神は、都市に出没したからこそ恐怖の的だったのである。 片田舎に出没しても、ちっとも活躍できなかっただろう。 もちろん、乱歩の大人ものも都市を舞台にしたものが多い。 本書でも写真入りで紹介されている同潤会アパートをはじめとした数々が、様々な作品の舞台であり、事件が起こり、犯人が潜伏していたりしたのだ。 そう、あれらの作品を読んでイメージしていたものの写真が見られる、というだけでも本書の価値はある。 そして、それらの建物、施設、場所の歴史、地理的な意味、そして舞台となった作品などが、著者の熱い、しかし冷静な筆で紹介されている。 だから、本書は乱歩作品を読むときのまさに副読本であり、参考書なのだ。 本書を通して読んだのはもう随分と前だが、今でもときどき引っ張り出しては、パラパラと捲って楽しんでいる。 本書の楽しさはやはり文章とともにある写真である。 だから文庫版よりも、この大判が良い。
