現代日本語の「使役」という文法現象の性質の解明にあたり、本書では「使役文」の性質と「使役動詞」の性質とを意識的に分けつつ相互の関係を探ることにつとめた。それによって使役文の全体像を捉えることを目指し、使役文の意味・文法構造の種々相、使役文のヴォイス性(原動文・使役文・受身文の関係)、使役動詞の動詞性およびその変容(語彙的意味の一単位性、他動詞化、後置詞化、判断助辞化)等について実証的に論じた。
