作者の家: 黙阿弥以後の人びと
Sakusha no Ie: People After Mokuami is Toshio Kawatake's nonfiction work of modern theater and family history. After the death of kabuki playwright Kawatake Mokuami, his daughter Itome preserves the family line, and the book traces that household's history through both the author's family memory and theater scholarship.
Work Information
A nonfiction account of the house of a kabuki playwright and the changes of modern Japan through Mokuami's successors.
Toshio Kawatake, Mokuami's great-grandson, uses family materials and memory to portray how the household of a kabuki playwright survived after the Meiji period. At its center is Mokuami's daughter Itome, who inherited the house instead of his eldest son and confronted conflicts over succession and copyright. From the intersection of family, performing arts, women's lives, and modern institutions, the book brings into view changes in the theatrical world and the lives of ordinary people.
