私小説の秀作。
阿部光子は1912年、徳富蘇峰とともに「国民新聞」を創設した阿部充家の娘として生まれ、日本女子大学校に入るが、左翼運動に連座して退学、父の死後、山室軍平の子・山室武甫の後妻となる。50歳で神学校に入る。小説を書き続けるがなかなかものにならず、1965年、「遅い目覚めながらも」などで田村俊子賞、女流文学賞を受賞し、90代まで活動した。これはその当時の阿部の、おろおろうろうろしながらの人生を描いた私小説集で、50歳の新人のみずみずしさが感じられる。
