Laura Lippman, the acclaimed New York Times bestselling author of The Most Dangerous Thing, I’d Know You Anywhere , and What the Dead Know , returns with an addictive story that explores how one man’s disappearance echoes through the lives of the wife, mistress, and daughters he left behind. When Felix Brewer meets Bernadette “Bambi” Gottschalk at a Valentine’s Dance in 1959, he charms her with wild promises, some of which he actually keeps. Thanks to his lucrative—if not all legal—businesses, she and their three little girls live in luxury. But on the Fourth of July, 1976, Bambi’s comfortable world implodes when Felix, newly convicted and facing prison, mysteriously vanishes. Though Bambi has no idea where her husband—or his money—might be, she suspects one woman does: his mistress, Julie. When Julie disappears ten years to the day that Felix went on the lam, everyone assumes she’s left to join her old lover—until her remains are eventually found. Now, twenty-six years after Julie went missing, Roberto “Sandy” Sanchez, a retired Baltimore detective working cold cases for some extra cash, is investigating her murder. What he discovers is a tangled web stretching over three decades that connects five intriguing women. And at the center is the missing man Felix Brewer. Somewhere between the secrets and lies connecting past and present, Sandy will find the truth. And when he does, no one will ever be the same.

Since Laura Lippman’s debut, she has been recognized as a distinctive voice in mystery fiction and named one of the “essential” crime writers of the last 100 years. Stephen King called her “special, even extraordinary,” and Gillian Flynn wrote, “She is simply a brilliant novelist.” Her books have won most of the major awards in her field and been translated into more than twenty-five languages. She lives in Baltimore and New Orleans with her teenager.

レビュー

  • Four Stars

    Excellent

  • I enjoyed this book immensely

I enjoyed this book immensely. I felt the characters were very real, very human, and I have to admit I liked that it was set not far from where I live. Most of Laura Lippman's books are set in the Baltimore area and I am from the DC area. I have to say that I like the stand alone novels better than the Tess Monaghan novels though in this one there is the slightest tie in that doesn't affect the story. You'll see! The driving force in this book is the character that has disappeared, a loving but unfaithful husband, an indulgent father to the three daughters who's lives, along with their mother's, are greatly affected by his sudden leave taking. He is not quite a gangster but someone who lives on the edge and he has some illegal operations as well as legitimate ones. When a jail term threatens, he sneaks out of town not to be seen again. This is very loosely based on a real case from the Baltimore area, but as Ms. Lippman makes very clear, the surrounding characters and events in this book are completely fictional. The original case caused her to speculate on how a family might go through the years, having lost not only the head of the household, but the income that had been provided. One of the big questions in the book, is whether there was money left for the family and if so, where did it go, since they are left to struggle and borrow from friends and family?

  • Great Edic Family Tale

It really wasn't about Felix, was it? It is about those left behind his betrayal. Their behavior, their struggles, their pain and the scars he left. No one was untouched even his friends. I never put this down except to sleep or eat!! All American story - excess - greed - no respect for authority - you have to love it. I know I did. Best vacation read and I read 4 novels while on vacation.
