December 1940 and England lies under German occupation. In the West Country, Nick Penny comes home after four months as a prisoner of war to act as interpreter to the provincial governor. He finds his father dead, his mother crippled, and his best friend Roy heavily involved in a resistance movement. When war hero Matty Cordington returns to run his father's estate, the three friends are re-united in a common purpose. Life under the occupation becomes a compromise at every level. Nick's sister Joan sleeps with a profiteer to find food for her family. There are leaks in the resistance movement, and Matty's girlfriend is fingered and dispatched. The occupation turns nastier as Hitler invades Russia, with less food and greater demands on the civilian population to labour in the Reich. Britain's Jews are first deported, then the 'Final Solution' is enacted on English soil. But treachery still dogs the resistance and, hunted by the Gestapo and the British police, Nick and his girlfriend Angel desperately race to eliminate the real traitor. The story then escalates to an explosive climax at the very centre of occupational power.
Murray Davies was born ad brought up in the South Wales valleys, the son of a miner. He is the author of five thrillers, The Drumbeat of Jimmy Sands , The Samson Option , The Devil's Handshake , Collaborator and The Dogs in the Streets . He lives in Greenwich and Wiltshire.

Thrills a plenty
A fantastic storyline that kept you guessing. The characters were realistic and believable. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and give it a high recommendation

Collaborator
Long but totally worth the time it took to read it.Of course it's fiction but a quite believable probality and one can only wish the world had chosen this one. Great characters, lots of surprising turns and superb writing.

Quite credible alternate history.
I have never highlighted a book so much in my life. Many deft, apt little touches. Nothing out of place to suspend belief in the creation.. Credible, detailed story of the South west of England under German rule from 1940, the suffering, the austerity, the everyday heroism and everyday betrayal as occupation brought out the best and the worst in people. All lovingly crafted. Not a hair out of place. Seriously brilliant. It will repay reading again and again. The heroine and hero deserve another two or three follow up stories too, but the writer has diversified so I must get my hands of some more of his works.

Valiant
This is a valiant effort to write a novel novel - but: it misses the mark by just a touch. While the reader gets the gist of the era and circumstances after a while: it would have benefited by the addition of even just a opening paragraph setting the scene: date and circumstances. The author tries to get the reader into a frame of mind as to the circumstances and experiences of the characters, but, I never really felt I was IN the era. The narrative swaps back and forth between first and third person presentation, sometimes from one paragraph to the next...which can be disconcerting. Official declarations by the invading power do not have an air of authenticity. STILL - with some skim reading past boring filler - the yarn dragged me along...
