• the novelty book

  my friends and some fan say the show is much better than the book, and i think maybe its the truth. like them i love the TV version of Dexter so much and i think the show is better, but i still like this one too. all the supporting characters from the show are here. They are almost the same as the show.[the half-Japanese character Masuka on the show is Masuoka in the book] like the show Dexter is fairly likeable because he only kills the really bad guys and his life is going along nicely until another serial killer emerges in Miami. i have to admit that i felt like something is missing in the book, but i think thats because i already had seen the great show. and the show is too great. ithink thanks to the show the books series are underrated. maybe it's not a great literature, but its humorous and grabbing. To be fair, the book version of Dexter is one of the most original and gripping books ive ever read. if you really like the show, try the book, i think its worth it PS. Dexter series are not for young children

• A slightly shaky but thrilling start.

  Jeff Lindsay's first novel in the as of now series of four reads like any other first novel. It is a little shakey around the establishment of characters and their relationships and intensely focused on the main character (who is also the first person narrator). Nevertheless, Darkly Dreaming Dexter is an excellent start to a new crime series with a twist. Our hero is a misanthropic villain who has been trained by his father to be almost but not quite human. This idea amid the blood lust, murder and crime fighting allows an ongoing social critique of the facades of everyday social life and ironically humanises the dangerous criminals we see everyday on the news. Making them more like "us". The clipping fast paced plot of DDD is aided by the Lindsay's obvious joy of writing which is reflected in Dexter's own internal monologue in the form of wry, slightly askew self conscious puns, alliteration and reminders that the ordinary troubles such as emotions don't effect Dexter because he simply does not have them. Coming to Dexter after the TV series it is somewhat of a shock to see how similar the two are up until about the three-quarter mark. From there on, Dexter "the books" become far removed from Dexter "the show". Of particular interest is the TV show's neutering of any mystical/occult elements (which become more prominent further down the line) and the choices made in terms of who it lets live and die and who become fully fleshed out characters and a certain key plot point regarding Deborah. In all, although I enjoy the TV show, the books are far more interesting, gruesome, playful and suspenseful. This, the first Dexter novel, is far from perfect but a great read all the same. Stick with the series because it gets a lot better (and becomes something entirely different from the TV show). Not necessarily for fans of traditional serial killer vicarious voyeurism (“I just want to know the mind of the maniac” type stuff) but could not be more highly recommended to fans of Chuck Palahniuk and off-kilter crime fiction such as Kinky Freidman and Nero Wolfe.

• Disappointing

  I bought the book because I love the TV series so much and thought the person who thought of that story must be a genius, but I must say, I'm rather disappointed. There are far too many useless dialogues and asides, and the story does not move very fast because of that. It's rather boring and I much prefer the TV series. There it was obviously re-written by a team of really genius writers. The characters are also more developed in the TV series than they are in the book.

  マイアミ警察署の血液分析研究所に勤務する主人公のDexterは、若くハンサムで紳士的な模範市民。しかし彼には秘密があった。今までに何十人も殺人を犯しているのだ。彼のターゲットは、他の殺人犯や小児愛者等の社会のゴミであり、無実の人々には手を出さないのがルール。そんな一見「平穏な」彼の生活が、ある連続殺人鬼によって脅かされる。警察が必死に追う男は、Dexterを誘っているのか？それとも、Dexter自身が、無意識の内に猟奇的殺人を行っているのか？ 「怖いけど、もうDexterの虜！」「ハンニバル・レクターが好きな方に！」などなど本国のレビューでやたらと賞賛されていて、もちろんレクター博士に魅力を感じる私も購入。本書がデビュー作で、好評を得たらしくシリーズになっています。文章は軽い感じでさらっと読めます。「自分は人間ではない。心も感情もない」と言い切り、人殺しをするDexterに、読者は少し罪悪感を持ちながらも好感さえ抱きます。しかし、やはりレクター博士の怖さ度とは比較になりません…背筋にゾクッと来る物がないんです。 暇つぶしにはなりますが、後には残りません。

• Just as entertaining as the TV Series

  Dexter Morgan will be familiar to anyone who has seen the TV series, DEXTER (which is adapted from this series). For newcomers, he's a blood-splatter analyst for the Miami Police who applies Harry's Code (a moral code developed by his foster father) rein in the instincts of his Dark Passenger so that he only kills murderers who have escaped justice. To disguise his true nature, he's cultivated an aura of normalcy - his girlfriend is a woman with two children but doesn't want sex due to the brutality she suffered from her ex boyfriend and to his colleagues he's a friendly soul who brings in pastries. Life is going well until a new serial killer hits town - one who dismembers his victims and leaves them wrapped in small parcels, but who never leaves a trace of blood. Dexter's fascination with the case grows when the killer begins to leave messages for him, messages that suggest he knows what Dexter really is. Soon he finds himself caught between helping his sister, Debs, and her police colleagues catch the killer and wanting to help his achieve his vision and soon he's faced with a deadly choice that could change his life forever. The pacing is tight, with Lindsay keeping the events rocketing alone. More to the point, it's darkly entertaining with Dexter's narration laced with self-mocking irony and twisted observations on the mystery and the people around him. Some of the humour is spectacularly dark, which may well put some readers off. It's because Dexter's voice is so vivid that the supporting cast pale in comparison. Of those worth noting, the most striking are LaGuerta, an untalented detective who's risen through the ranks through her political instincts; Debs, Dexter's foul-mouthed foster-sister who is determined to be a detective but who lacks the political skills to work the system to her advantage and Masouka, Dexter's fellow lab rat who doesn't quite fit in. Fans of the tv show will be disappointed that Doakes, Angel and Rita don't feature more but there are some crucial differences in the plot that should hold their interest. I'm looking forward to reading more in the series.

• Ein genialer Kult-Thriller!

  "Darkly Dreaming Dexter" ist der brillante Auftaktroman, der uns den forensischen Analytiker und moralischen Serienmörder Dexter Morgan vorstellt. Der Roman ist packend, voller schwarzem Humor und erzählt aus Dexters unvergleichlich zynischer Perspektive. Er muss einen anderen Serienmörder, den "Ice Truck Killer", jagen, der eine unheimliche Verbindung zu Dexters eigener Vergangenheit zu haben scheint. Die Mischung aus mörderischer Spannung und Dexters trockenem Witz ist perfekt. Ein origineller, unvergesslicher Thriller, der die Regeln des Genres neu definiert hat!

• Excelente narrativa

  Excelente libro que mezcla el suspenso y la comedia en usa sola obra. La narrativa te brinda una visión más profunda de la planteada en la serie de TV.
