• Warren Ellis At His Best

  Warren Ellis, the writer, and Chris Weston, the artist, are at the top of their game with this wonderful graphic novel. Just imagine, what if the British had taken the German rocket scientists instead of letting them be taken by the United States? A powerful, brilliant turn-around, a re-write of history. In 1945, as the Americans close in on the German scientists, an airman named John Dashwood secretly bombs them out and takes the rocket-men for England. Not only do they take the scientists but they have a dark slush fund of money to be used only for the quest for outer space. True to history, they decide that America and Russia will be wasting their money on the cold war--not a mistake England wants to make. The British realize that for man to have a future, we must be able to leave the planet and use the resources on the moon, Mars, and beyond. The art is astounding, a beautiful full page drawing of a man in a space suit saluting the flag of Great Britain on the moon. The airman who started it all is now Professor Emeritus Sir John Dashwood, and he is the only one who knows where the "dark" slush fund that started the journey came from. But what if someone uncovered the truth? Sir John Dashwood is summoned to the commanding base on Mars, where cities undercover abound as the conquering of space makes Great Britain the richest country in the world, and he is confronted with his knowledge of where the money came from. There are so many astounding reveals in this graphic novel that it will blow your mind. A great work of art! Ministry of Space

• Interesting book but condition of the book wasn't good.

  Overall, the book was alright and interesting. The only disappointing part was the condition of the book. It was abit worn out and corners of the book were crumpled. :(

• Una ucronía en la que el Reino Unido es la única potencia espacial del siglo XX

  Ministry of Space es una ucronía en la que al final de la Segunda Guerra Mundial es el Reino Unido quien se hace con Wernher von Braun Braun y su equipo y por ello con sus conocimientos sobre cohetes. Eso le permite convertirse en el primer país en lanzar un cohete en un vuelo suborbital; en el primero en colocar un satélite en órbita; en el primero en lanzar una persona en un vuelo suborbital y luego en vuelos orbitales… De hecho el Reino Unido, en esta historia alternativa, es la única potencia espacial hasta 2001, cuando los Estados Unidos por fin parecen dispuestos a lanzar su primer cohete. La cuestión es a qué precio ha conseguido el Reino Unido todo esto más allá de haberse llevado por delante algunos soldados estadounidenses y otros rusos, aunque de forma encubierta, para evitar que ninguno de los dos países aliados se hicieran con von Braun. Aparte de las ilustraciones de las naves espaciales, que son muy detalladas y con un delicioso aire retro, el cómic es una crítica no muy velada al imperialismo, al racismo, y una cuestión, como decía antes, de si el fin justifica los medios.

• A splendid job

  Way back in 2001 I purchased the first two Image comics in a trilogy with the overarching title of Ministry of Space. For some reason I never managed to get hold of the third concluding part. Finally, I’ve obtained the graphic novel version (3rd printing) dated 2004. Being a reader and fan of the Dan Dare stories from Eagle, I was drawn to this comic because its artwork appeared to be paying homage to the greats Hampson and Bellamy. The team consists of: Warren Ellis, writer; Chris Weston, artist; Laura Martin, colourist; and Michael Heisler, letterer. And they’ve done a splendid job of it. The story begins in 2001 in an alternate history, where England had already conquered space, complete with the space station Churchill. Great Britain’s Ministry of Space is headed by Professor Dashwood. He’s being alerted that the Americans are finally going to launch their own spaceships. Then there’s a flashback to Peenemunde, 1945, where the Americans are secretly bombed by the British, denying them the space rocket secrets… The story moves through the 1950s and 1960s to the colonisation of Mars. The dark mystery as to how Britain stole a march on the allies in the race to space is slowly revealed... Weston’s artwork is excellent. The detail in every page is simply outstanding. There are several splash pages that enhance the story: for example when Dashwood’s experimental rocket crashes into a windmill – you can virtually see every splinter of wood!

• Das goldene Zeitalters des Empires im Weltall

  1944. Der zweite Weltkrieg ist fast beendet, England liegt am Boden, aber ein Mann weiß wie er das Empire aus seiner Asche erheben wird. Sein Name, John Dashwood, Commodore der Luftstreitkräfte Englands. Sein Ziel: den Weltraum erobern. Und das tut er auch mithilfe gewaltiger, finanzieller Mittel, die er als "Schwarzkonten" bezeichnet. Siebenundfünfzig Jahre später ist England die dominierende Macht im Weltraum und alles scheint bestens zu laufen. Doch Amerika kontaktiert den britischen Geheimdienst, die sich wiederum an die britische Raumfahrtbehörde wenden, welche Dashwood (nun "Sir" Dashwood) kontaktieren, um sich mit ihm zu unterhalten. Der Grund: Man weiß inzwischen woher das Geld kommt. Wäre "Ministry of Space" in Prosaform verfasst worden, wäre es nichts weiter als eine kleine Kurzgeschichte von höchstens 20-40 Seiten. Aber das ist auch nicht schlimm, denn "Ministry of Space" ist auch nichts weiter als eine kleine Geschichte. Die kleine Geschichte eines Mannes mit einem großen Traum, für den er bereit ist alles zu tun. Dashwood ist bei weitem kein sympathischer Protagonist und vor allem ist er ein Kind seiner Zeit. Das England, welchem er zum Aufstieg verholfen hat, bleibt auf ewig in den 40ern/50ern verhaftet, da es keinen Grund sieht angesichts des Erfolgs im Weltall groß verändern zu müssen (was gesellschaftlich durchaus düstere Folgen hat). So hat also alles seine zwei Seiten und man ist gerne bereit Dashwood und England zu verurteilen, wenn da nicht der Fakt wäre, dass das All tatsächlich für die Menschheit besiedelt und urban gemacht wird, dass Probleme gelöst werden, die uns heute vor eine Herausforderung stellen. Doch auch das erscheint wiederum wie Schall und Rauch, wenn am Ende...aber das sollte man selbst gelesen haben. "Ministry of Space" ist eine interessante Geschichte, ein Projekt, das eindeutig von Herzen kommt, wenn man sich das Nachwort des Autors Warren Ellis durchliest, vielleicht nicht sonderlich spannend im klassischen Sinne (Action und Spionageaktionen gibt es keine), aber künstlerisch und intellektuell gesehen ganz interessant. Es ist eine Hommage an die verträumten Visionen der 50er, ohne jedoch den Blick für die Realität zu verlieren, ohne große Schnörkel erzählt, wundervoll vom Zeichner Chris Weston (der einen realistischen, aber gleichzeitig retrohaften Stil anschlägt) gezeichnet und in sich eine kleine Perle, für Liebhaber der Science-Fiction und Freunde großer Visionen. Gibt es ansonsten keine Kritikpunkte? Nun doch, einen. Das Vorwort von Ellis Autorenkollegen Mark Millar (Wanted, Kick-Ass) darf geflissentlich überlesen werden, denn es liest sich eher wie eine (natürlich ironisch gemeinte, ha-ha) Beleidigung des Lesers und hat auch keinerlei Inhalt anzubieten, der über eine kurze Lobpreisung von Ellis hinausgeht (ansonsten wird der Leser dazu aufgerufen endlich "Ministry of Space" zu lesen. Danke Mister Millar, ohne sie wäre ich nicht darauf gekommen). Es ist reine Zeitverschwendung, weswegen man sich besser gleich dem eigentlichen Comic zuwenden sollte, der dafür eine angenehme Lektüre bleibt.
