A first novel. 50,000 first printing.

Jedediah Berry holds an M.F.A. from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and has been published in Best New American Voices 2008 (his story was described by Kirkus Reviews as a “mordant, gripping fantasy”) as well as in literary magazines and online fiction sites. レビュー

  • Mesmerising, sometimes baffling, at moments superb

This is a fine book, mesmerising, sometimes baffling, at moments superb. It's brave and different, with enough of the noir to make it clearly a detective story but one that stands apart from others. It has a plot and a resolution. Within lies every sort of strangeness, a boundless unknown, a recognition that the forces of both law and chaos are necessary and yet both shadows. It's about clocks and filing and a man's world turned inside out by seeing a woman in a plaid coat on a platform. Does that make sense? It shouldn't. There's no way to summarise what happens here. And that is the relief that it affords. That's its pleasure. I can't recommend it highly enough. It proves that novels do not have all to be the same

  • A post-modernist take on the detective novel

This novels take on the post-modernist style is beginning to feel a bit dated, as if the author wanted to imitated Conan Doyle but was afraid to be too much like that author. It is entertaining, though somewhat self conscious of it.

  • For both mystery and fantasy fans

An outstanding novel. Fantasy, detection and mystery rolled in to one!

  • a twisty journey through the author's imagination

This story was a thrill to read. The writing style and story had me reading this book in a short amoy nt of days. Well done.

  • interesting read

Being insane or very open minded is a prerequisite of enjoying this book. But it grabbed me from the first page and truly kept me involved until the end. I will seek out Jedediah Berry again
