• 友人が友人でない密告社会の恐怖

  エーレンデュル警部シリーズ４作目の本作品の事件の背景は一作目のドメスティックヴァイオレンス、２作目のレイプ事件といったものとはおおきく異なり、ベルリンの壁崩壊前の東ドイツの監視、密告社会である。監視はドイツ人にとどまらず、アイスランドやハンガリーからの大学生にも及ぶ。 レイキャビックから数十キロ離れた湖が地震の影響で、湖底の割れ目から水が流出し、湖底の一部があらわになる。そこで発見された頭蓋骨には、何かで殴打されたらしい穴があったことから、エーレンデュル警部といつものふたりの同僚の捜査が始まる。捜査はなかなか進展しないが、その間１９６０年代に東ドイツ、ライプチヒ大学に留学したトーマスの回想が挿入され、発見された頭蓋骨との関係を暗示する。 回想で語られる、友人、知人、時には家族さえ信じることのできない、共産主義国家の東ドイツ社会の恐怖。秘密警察に愛する者を奪われたトーマスは、アイスランドに帰国後も喪失感と悲しみは深く、密告をした者への憤りは消えることがない。 初めの数章は当時の東ドイツの状況の描写が多く、多少まどろこしいと思うところもあるが、次第に事件の核心へと進み、最後まで飽きさせないミステリーであり 互いに監視させ、密告させるような社会体制の恐怖を巧みに描いた小説でもある。

• アイスランドの推理小説は一味違う。

  日本でも学生運動が盛んであったころの時代に共産圏に留学した人々がアイスランドに帰ってきてどのように生きたか、時代と陰鬱なアイスランドの風土が今日日深く描かれ、堅実な生き方をしているアイスランドの人々に共感を覚える。英訳も読みやすかった。

• 大推薦です。

  期待に違わぬ優れた作品です。前作よりも社会性が増し、その分物語に深みが感じられます。ミステリーとしての面白さも十分で最後まで読者を引っ張ってくれます。また多少作為的なきらいはありますが、ラスト余韻嫋々です。よく似た作風のヘニングマンケルの諸作品と双璧をなします。これほど優れた作品を書き続ける著者の筆力に脱帽です。

• アイスランド・Erlendur刑事・4巻目

  水位の下がった湖の底から何十年も前の撲殺遺体が発見され、その遺体にソ連製の受信機が巻きついていたことから、かつてアイスランド内で活動していたとされる東側のスパイと遺体との関係について捜査を進めていくこととになり、、、。1970年代にアイスランドから東ドイツに留学していた（元）若者の回想とともに進んでいきます。

• leisurely paced, intellectually thrilling

  Based on Amazon customer reviews, my curiosity was piqued about Islandic author Arnaldur Indridson. I am hooked. Apparently this is his fourth mystery - for jumping into the middle of a series, I felt some background information about the characters was missing, but it didn't detract from the story at all. The story is concerned with a body that is uncovered after a remote lake begins to drain, the result of a fissure opening following an earthquake. Given the small and relatively insular community that is Iceland, the discovery of a murder victim alone warrants attention - matters are compounded further by the fact that the now skeletonized corpse is tied to Cold War-era Soviet transmitter equipment. The pace of the book is lesiurely, which works well here - to me, it seems to fit the culture and outlook of Iceland (as near as I can approximate), and the extremes of weather that develop a sort of "Nordic patience" as the investigating detectives sort through the list of possible victims (and by extension, possible suspects.) As an added twist, the story alternates between the investigation and the murderer's history, from his days as a student in Leipzig (in what was then East Germany) to the careful study the criminal gives the unfolding investigation as it plays out in the local media. The effect is really two mysteries at once: one to identify the body, the other to discover who the murderer is. I relished the gradual unraveling of the story. I enjoy a good mystery, particularly those that are far flung or "out of the way" (see Andrea Camilleri's Inspector Montalbano or better yet, Boris Akunin) in terms of setting and character. This fits that bill perfectly. On its own merits as a mystery, it is also outstanding - while the ending didn't have me catching my breath, I was applauding the fact that the conclusion nonetheless caught me off guard.

• Interesting mystery about life in Communist East Germany

  This book would appeal to those who follow Indridason's Icelandic police mysteries but also those who are interested in the life lead by those living under Communism in East Germany. I enjoyed the comparison of democratic Iceland and repression in East Germany.

• What an opportunity lost!

  One of the most boring detective novels I have ever read.

• Reykjavik Murders

  Complex, compelling and haunting story set in faraway Iceland. Main characters continue to develop. Other characters slowly reveal their secrets as the cases unfold. Excellent series.
