The second film of the Heisei Gamera trilogy (1996). Alien silicon-based lifeforms called the Legion arrive with gigantic plant bodies, invading Sapporo and other areas of Japan. The story follows the Self-Defense Forces and Gamera battling the Legion; the film presents unique ecological ideas (high-oxygen environments, electromagnetic communication) and was praised for its effects and staging.
Regarded as a key director of the 1990s Heisei Gamera trilogy. Gamera 2 received unusual recognition within Japanese SF circles and helped raise Kaneko's profile. His films have been re-evaluated in recent years through 4K restorations and re-screenings.
