Legacy

Shigetoshi Kawatake was a leading theatre scholar in kabuki and theatre history from the prewar through postwar periods. He taught for many years at Waseda University, served as director of the Tsubouchi Memorial Theatre Museum and as the founding chair of the Japan Theatre Studies Association. His major works became foundational texts and greatly influenced subsequent researchers.

  • Born with the family name Ichimura (third son of Yosaburo Ichimura).
  • Walked about 10 km daily to attend school until middle school in Iida.
  • Graduated from Waseda University, Department of English, in 1911.
  • In 1911 he was adopted (by the family related to Kawatake Mokuami) on Tsubouchi's recommendation.
  • Received a Doctor of Literature in 1943 for 'Study of Kabuki History'.

  • Grave is at Gentsuji Temple in Nakano, Tokyo.
