In 1954, detective Gennai Tōjō visits the mountain villages around May Night Village to investigate a series of mysterious deaths and disappearances connected to ritual rites for the Mizuchi. As ritual participants and villagers die under strange circumstances, Tōjō unravels the interwoven mystery of crime and local supernatural beliefs.
Shinzo Mitsuda is regarded as an author who combines classical honkaku mystery structure with powerful horror imagery. Mizuchi no Gotoki Shizumu Mono won the 10th Honkaku Mystery Award (novel) and has ranked highly in several mystery best-of lists, becoming one of his representative works.
Using onomatopoeia and mimetic words masterfully, the visceral descriptions are genuinely frightening. It is a honkaku mystery dealing with impossible crime, a horror novel teeming with the uncanny, and even incorporates elements of a nature-driven panic story.
