Early work in the 'Kogarashi Monjiro' period series featuring a wandering hero. The TV adaptation became a major hit and greatly raised the author's public profile.
Written during convalescence and published in revised form in 1960; the novel marked his formal debut as a honkaku (classical) mystery novelist.
Known for prolific output and a combination of entertainment and technical skill; the TV adaptation of 'Kogarashi Monjiro' made him widely known. His corpus of some 377 books, many screen adaptations, and a memorial library have continued to influence later writers.
A mystery novel must be honkaku (a proper puzzle) at minimum, and beyond that it should pursue realism and other qualities.
