Through the life of Sawase Jingoro, a horse handler from Mikawa who is drawn into Tokugawa service, exile, trade routes through Sakai, Satsuma, Hakata, and Luzon, and Hideyoshi's invasion of Korea, the novel portrays a conscience that refuses to yield to power.
