清末の留学生は日本で何を学んだか
清末の中国は、もはや中華大国として独立自尊というわけにいかず、変法維新・改革を求める声が巻き起こる。しかし漢族は支配され、革命か、改革か、明確な路線に結集できるはずもなかった。曽国藩がアメリカに留学生を送り、李鴻章がイギリス、フランス、ドイツへ送ったが、甲午戦争（日清戦争）の敗北で洋務運動は終焉し、今度は日本へ学生を送る時代となった。本書は以後、辛亥革命までの時代の日本への留学生の体験を、親中派日本人、為政者や知識人との交流を交えて、詳細に物語る。日本は土足厳禁、毎日風呂に入り、畳に布団を敷いて雑魚寝をするという暮らし方に、中国人は驚く。街に出れば、辮髪が豚の尻尾よろしく、チャンチャン坊主と子供たちにはやし立てられ、人類館では纏足女性に注目があつまるといったことから、様々な教育機関での授業、方々の見学、日本側の差別的な対応、日本で学んだことの中国への導入の苦労など、実に盛沢山の記述に出会う。日本も努力しなかったわけではないが、しかし、中国人留学生は親日にはならず抗日になった。なぜ抗日になったのか、本書を読みながらいろいろ考えさせられた。辛亥革命後、留学はフランスに向かう。「留仏勤工倹学」運動である。本書は１９９１年刊行で、２００９年の第５刷を買っていて、このほど通読した。中日関係には難しい問題がたくさんあると改めて認識した。
