1996年に出た単行本の文庫化。 もともとは朝日新聞に1995-96年に連載されたもの。前著『アフリカを食べる』の続編。 朝日新聞社の特派員としてアフリカ各地をめぐった著者が、各国での体験を通してアフリカの何が問題なのか、明確に示してくれる。 ヨーロッパ諸国の支配からやっと解放されたアフリカ諸国は、しかし、植民地時代と比べて治安も食糧事情も悪くなっている。それは指導者たちがみずからの地位を守るのに汲々として、市民生活を顧みないためである。戦争と混乱、飢えと病気が国家を支配している。 アフリカで寝ると題されているものの、ホテルだとかテントだとか寝台列車だとかは話の糸口に過ぎず、著者の目にした諸問題が前面に押し出されている。
